Growing - The Sky's Run Into The Sea (2003)

My new goal is to post at least one album from an artist featured on my show each week.

This week I am going to post The Sky's Run Into The Sea by the drone/noise group Growing. After finally breaking my drone barrier many months ago (thanks to Hasan of the Into the Void blog) I have been listening to a lot of music that fits under the blanket genre known as drone. Growing is an example of one of these bands that has really stuck for me. Growing has toured with my favorite band of the genre, Boris, which was a huge incentive for me to check them out.

The music can be described as having the drone/ambient foreground with an extremely rhythmic background that almost sounds danceable. I believe this rhythmic background is the element that draws me most to Growing. I hope you all enjoy this album as much I do. PLEASE buy it if you like it.

Finally, I'm back with some music updates.

Over my break from music blogging I have been heavily getting into this newish hip hop collective from Minneapolis named Doomtree. Doomtree is a 9 member hip-hop collective filled with members from all sorts of musical backgrounds and influences. They come together to create a sound that is vastly different from anything that has ever been done in hip hop or music in general. I don't want to make comparisons about what Doomtree is doing now to what Wu-Tang did in the 90s because The Clan will probably never be matched but the parallels are obvious.

So this week I'll be updating my blog every day with a different Doomtree related release. Starting this week with the album False Hopes which is a collaboration release from all of Doomtrees members.

Otherwise I have been busy as hell with school this semester - I thought for some reason it would be a good idea to take all of my hardest classes in one semester.

School is ending soon though and this thing will no longer be neglected. I've been listening to a ton of new music and watching a bunch of new movies so expect a shitstorm of posts starting sometime later this month. Probably around Maryland Deathfest time.

Binary Star - Masters of the Universe (2000)

Binary Star was a serious force to be reckoned with in underground hip-hop during their short lived history from 1998-2000. They were composed of One Be Lo and Senim Silla who have both released solo work since Binary Star that is also highly regarded in the underground hip hop community. Although the duo was involved in the criminal lifestyle of the ghetto they never glorified criminal activity in any of their music. In fact Binary Stars lyrics did what most hip hop doesn't and talked about the negatives involved with the lifestyle glorified in many rap lyrics. They saw hip hop as a new and legal way to escape their destructive lifestyles. Their lyrics were conscious, political, and spoke on the truth of what horrors really existed in this world of fast money, fast cars, women, and bling. This message in their lyrics became even more evident when the 2 split. In One Be Lo's 2005 release S.O.N.O.G.R.A.M. he has a song called "The Ghetto" in which he says:

You callin 9-1-1, this ain't a joke
You rollin like a blunt cause you might get smoked
The sad part about it ain't the money or the dope
The trigger man wasn't even old enough to vote

As I said next semester I wont be continuing my Hardcore radio show. However, I'll have another show this time for playing Metal of the atmospheric style (think doom, drone, prog, post, etc). It's one week from Hanukkah and I'm in a jazz mood so here's an early Hanukkah gift from myself to all my fellow Jews.

Jazz saxophonist John Zorn, who was born Jewish, has led a highly prolific career playing and composing in many different styles of jazz and other music. Some of the music he made may not even by considered "music" by the average joe, namely his extreme music jazz fusion groups Naked City and Painkiller. In these groups hes performed with people you may consider to be some of your favorites like Mike Patton, Bill Laswell, and Baltimore's own Bill Frisell. Some other of John Zorn's works include his work on movie and television scores, his work with orchestras, his solo jazz career, his record label Tzadik, and his Klezmer influenced jazz fusion project Masada, which I will be sharing with you.

Klezmer music, for those of you that don't know, is traditional Ashkenazi Jewish music from the 15th century. I don't really know the history of the music but it has had a revival in the united states in the last 20 years. Partially due to avant-garde jazz musicians such as Zorn. When John Zorn wrote the music for Masada he was trying to become more in touch with his Jewish heritage, saying "The idea with Masada is to produce a sort of radical Jewish music, a new Jewish music which is not the traditional one in a different arrangement, but music for the Jews of today. The idea is to put Ornette Coleman and the Jewish scales together."

Holy shit Mark likes drone now???

I wish I could answer 100% yes to that but I am still somewhat of a noob to it. However, I've been attempting to find more drone that interests me and I happened to find my biggest discovery in a while, The Angelic Process. Now I share it with you all.

The Angelic Process are from macon, georgia which is possibly the perfect place for inspiration for atmospheric metal besides alaska. It's kind of hard to describe exactly how this band sounds but I'll make my best attempt. Its like the atmosphere of post-rock combined with the intensity of sludge metal to form a sound that could only come from what has to be one of the most depressing places to live in America. If I could put into words how much I have loved this album in the 3 listens I have given it so far I would have no doubt about whether you would download this.

Unfortunately for someone like me who has just gotten into this band there is some bad news. Earlier this year K.Angylus, one of the members of this 2 man project, passed away. Hopefully his legend will live through the beautiful music he made.

In The Woods... is what progressive rock band Green Carnation were doing during their break while Tchort was a member of the black metal legends Emperor. In The Woods... created a brand of progessive metal that blended black metal, doom metal, and experimental rock of the 60s/70s to form a sound that would later influence many in the avant-garde black metal scene. The album Heart of the Ages, which was the bands first full length release, shows the beginnings of their experimentation beyond the typical black metal sound. They achieve this by adding keyboards, female vocals, clean signing along with black metal and death metal style vocals, long songs, tempo changes, and other things that are considered "progressive" or "avant-garde".

Porcupine Tree - The Psychedelic Era (mega post)

Some of you may know this but I'll say it anyway, when Steven Wilson originally formed the Porcupine Tree it was never meant to be taken seriously. Wilson and friend Malcom Stocks created the band as a hoax to pay homage to all the 70's psychedelic and krautrock bands they grew up listening to. When they formed the group they wrote crazy back stories about how the band met and random stereotypical events involving big festival concerts.

Now with this joke band they had Steven decided it would be a good idea to write some music to go along with the whole fake back story. As Wilson was writing what he had intended as a joke, he realized that some of the music was actually pretty good. So then came Porcupine Trees first 80 min cassette called Tarquin's Seaweed Farm

Steven Wilson sent out the cassette tape to people he thought might like and it ended up spreading around the UK underground. Realizing he might have something with this joke he called Porcupine Tree he decided to write more music of the same throwback 70s experimental style. Two more cassettes were released in 1990 one being The Love, Death & Mussolini EP and the other being The Nostalgia Factory both of which were similar in style to Tarquin's Seaweed Farm. These demos caught the attention of Freakbeat magazine editor Richard Allen who had a record label called Delirium Records (a lot of good bands on Delirium btw check it out). Allen agreed to re-release the Porcupine Tree demos on album initially planning to release a double album of everything but later deciding to release what he considered to be the best of. This best of early Porcupine Tree came to be known as On The Sunday Of Life

After On The Sunday Of Life Steven Wilson went on to write more original music for his psychedelic rock band Porcupine Tree on Delirium Records. Porcupine Tree was more and more becoming a serious endeavor but at the same time still was paying homage to the 70s experimental sounds of bands like Pink Floyd and Can. The next release to come from them titled Up The Downstairs was probably the first Porcupine Tree release Steven Wilson meant for people to take seriously. This cd is really trippy and remains one of my favorite Porcupine Tree releases. The copy I have is the original not the remix version with Gavin Harrison so sorry to those that like real drums but to me this version is better.

Up The Downstairs (1993)

Before Steven Wilson wrote Up The Downstairs he wrote a 30 minute single called Voyage 34 about an LSD trip. Wilson had initially intended to release Voyage 34 as a double album with Up The Downstairs but later rejected this idea and released the original Voyage 34 as a single in 1992. Then in 1993 Porcupine Tree released Voyage 34: Remixes which contained phase 3 and 4 of the voyage that began on the original single. Then in 2000 Porcupine Tree released a compilation of all 4 phases of Voyage 34 in an album titled Voyage 34: The Complete Trip.

The next thing Porcupine Tree would release Moonloop contained the song "Stars Die" which would be the first Porcupine Tree song to get rock radio play time. The rest is history.

I have recently rekindled my love for the slower forms of metal and thought I would share one of the gems of the 90s death doom metal scene with my friends. DiSEMBOWELMENT was an Australian death/doom metal band in the late 80s-90s that was very influential in creating the sound that would later be known as death doom metal.

A little bit about their style from wikipedia:

"The band played very slowly (and occasionally with great speed), and relied equally on the atmospheric effects of droning guitars and constant riffing. Disembowelment is credited by many other doom metal groups as being the originators of death/doom, along with the band Winter. The band was known for its atmospheric chanting, slow riffs and spiritual dark elements present in their symphonic, heavily distorted style."

Let The Right One In on imdb

The best movie of 2008 hands down. I recommend this movie to anyone that likes a good story with character building. If you were disappointed by the hype surrounding The Dark Knight definitely check this movie out.

Basically the plot is an awkward bullied kid named oskar ends up meeting a strange girl that moved into the same apartment complex as him. He falls in love with her but doesn't know she is a vampire (I didn't spoil anything the viewer knows this from the 2nd scene). I loved this movie because it gave Eli (the vampire) a back story and a conscience which is how a vampire should be. Not some mindless killer like how they are portrayed in a lot of American horror films. I think American horror directors get zombie and vampire confused or are just in it for the money. If you like movies that make you think and don't have a black and white portrayal of good vs. evil then definitely check this movie out if you can find it.

In case you are wondering there is already a Hollywood remake in the works...

I Think This Band Is A Joke But I Love It

I happened to stumble across a band that the term experimental wouldn't cover it. They are a grind/noise/everycore band from Fortuna, California called Antarctica. Their music is all over the place similar to iwrestledabearonce but I think they take their music even less seriously and I can't get enough. Their myspace is right here

They've released one EP titled "S.O.C.K." which apparently stands for "The Somatic Origin of Contemplating Kreatophagia" (O_O) and they are entering the studio in January to record a full length album. Here is S.O.C.K. for your listening pleasure

So I made this blog thing for a couple reasons. One being to talk about new obscure music and movies I like or don't and see if anyone gave a shit about what I think. The other being, that I'll be using this blog to discuss my radio show and other things that are happening at wmbc. My show is called "I Told You I Was Hardcore", if you get the reference great don't call attention to it, and I play new experimental hardcore music on my show along with some meme comedy, special guest interviews and other randomness. It comes on 6pm-7pm eastern U.S. time and if you can't listen live the most recent episode will be on this page available for streaming. The link to the wmbc website is http://wmbc.umbc.edu. We are a college radio station however we are free from the fcc because of only having an online broadcast. Also, the power of the webs makes it so you can listen from anywhere in the world.

A word about the title is that deathcore breakdowns remind me of rap music so its just sort of a phrase I came up with.
